Flutterwave Secures Nigerian Microfinance Banking License
Flutterwave officially shifted from being the "middleman" of African payments to becoming a direct player in the banking world. By securing a Microfinance Banking (MFB) license from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)
Flutterwave Inc., Africa’s leading payments technology company, has reached a major milestone by securing a Nigerian Microfinance Banking license. This achievement allows the company to hold funds and deposits directly, strengthening its financial infrastructure in Nigeria, its largest market. With this license, Flutterwave can now deliver faster and more efficient financial services for consumers, businesses, and enterprises.
Moving Beyond Sponsorship Models
Traditionally, global payment companies have relied on partnerships with established commercial banks to access national clearing and settlement systems. While this sponsorship model works, it often slows down innovation and requires fintechs to share transaction value with their banking partners.
By obtaining its own banking license, Flutterwave gains more control over how funds move within its ecosystem. It can now hold deposits, manage financial flows, and streamline operations. Although the company will continue working with banks, this license allows Flutterwave to internalise key parts of its financial value chain, boosting efficiency and enabling faster product development.
Unlocking Nigeria’s Digital Economy
Nigeria is one of Africa’s most vibrant financial markets, with trillions of naira flowing through digital payment channels every year. Operating directly within the regulated financial system gives Flutterwave the ability to optimise money movement and improve settlement efficiency for merchants, businesses, and consumers.
Olugbenga Agboola, Founder and CEO of Flutterwave, explained: “This milestone allows us to make our infrastructure more efficient and deliver faster, more reliable financial services. By operating directly within the financial system, we can streamline money movement, accelerate settlement for merchants, and build products that support sustainable long-term growth.”
A New Generation of Banking Infrastructure
For over a decade, Flutterwave has powered payments for millions of Nigerians and businesses worldwide. With this license, the company is expanding into a new era of banking designed for:
Consumers: Seamless accounts, transfers, and payments through SendApp.
Businesses: Accounts, payouts, payroll, and multi-currency tools.
Enterprises: Treasury and liquidity management solutions.
Digital Platforms: Embedded financial services for marketplaces.
Developers: APIs to build new financial products.
Integrated Financial Solutions
The license enhances Flutterwave’s core payments business by allowing it to manage funds more efficiently. SendApp users will enjoy instant transfers and personal account numbers, while over 2 million businesses can open accounts, run payroll, and access multi-currency services. Flutterwave also plans to introduce smart financial tools such as merchant lending, treasury products, and savings solutions powered by real transaction data.
Built on Trust and Innovation
Flutterwave’s infrastructure is backed by strong compliance and security standards, including PCI DSS Level 1 certification and enterprise-grade fraud protection. The company has already processed over $40 billion in payments and more than 1 billion transactions. Looking ahead, Flutterwave is exploring technologies like stablecoin-enabled settlement to connect African businesses more effectively to the global economy.
This milestone follows Flutterwave’s acquisition of Mono, which strengthened its financial connectivity. As the company approaches its tenth anniversary in 2026, it remains committed to building the financial infrastructure that powers Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
