Networking in African tech is more than swapping business cards. It isn’t about collecting LinkedIn connections or exchanging numbers at events; it’s about building genuine, mutually beneficial relationships. In Africa’s fast-growing ecosystem, where opportunities often spread through word of mouth and communities, your ability to connect with the right people can directly shape your career growth.

The first step is to be where conversations are happening. That could be tech conferences like Africa Tech Summit, GITEX Africa, or Lagos Tech Week, or smaller meetups, hackathons, and community events. Online spaces also play a big role; platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, and Telegram groups have become the digital town halls of African tech, where founders, developers, and investors share ideas and opportunities. But showing up isn’t enough. The key is to participate. Ask questions during Q&A sessions, volunteer to help at events, or share insights online. The more visible you are, the more you build recognition and credibility.

Once you’re in the room, whether physical or virtual, how you introduce yourself matters. A confident introduction doesn’t have to be loud or exaggerated; it just needs to be clear and intentional. A simple formula works: say who you are, what you’re working on or interested in, and add a relatable hook.

For instance: “Hi, I’m Caleb. I’m learning product design and came to this event to connect with other designers. I loved your point about user experience in Africa. Can I hear more?” That short exchange already signals your interest, your focus, and your openness to engage.

But relationships don’t grow when you only think about what you can take. One of the quickest ways to stand out is to offer value first. Share a useful article, recommend a tool, give thoughtful feedback, or support someone’s project online. In Africa’s close-knit tech scene, people remember those who contribute, not just those who ask for favours.

Even then, meeting someone once is not enough to build a real connection. Following up turns a brief moment into the start of a relationship. A short message within a day or two, referencing the conversation you had, shows sincerity. A personalised LinkedIn or X connection request goes further than a generic invite, and if it feels appropriate, suggesting a quick coffee or call can help solidify the connection. These small gestures show you value the interaction and want to keep it alive.

From there, the real art lies in staying in touch without being pushy. You don’t need to check in every week; instead, let your presence be felt through genuine engagement, commenting on their updates, congratulating them on milestones, or sharing something they’d find useful. The goal is to remain on their radar in a way that feels natural, not forced.

Ultimately, networking in Africa’s tech scene is about showing up, being authentic, and giving before asking. The ecosystem is young, vibrant, and relationship-driven, which means one good connection can truly change your trajectory. So don’t overthink it, reach out to one new contact today. It could be the start of your next big opportunity.
