Moniepoint is phasing out MonieWorld, its UK remittance product for Nigerians in the UK, less than two years after launch, as the fintech redirects resources toward its core African markets.

The company said the decision follows a review of its portfolio and long-term priorities, according to TechCabal. Launched in London on 14 April 2025, MonieWorld allowed UK residents to send money to Nigeria using a MonieWorld account, British bank cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

What MonieWorld Was Built to Do

MonieWorld was positioned as more than a remittance app. Founder Tosin Eniolorunda framed it as an immigrant banking play. “We’re not trying to be a remittance app. We’re building a proper immigrant banking platform,” he said at launch. In another statement, he added: “Our goal is not just remittance but a full-fledged diaspora financial services platform to serve the African diaspora.”

The product was available only to UK residents, with checks for residency, creditworthiness, and identity required at signup. It operated under Moniepoint GB Limited, registered in England and Wales with company number 15500471, and traded as Moniepoint UK Ltd, an FCA-authorised electronic money institution under licence number 900098. The company detailed the product's rollout in its UK market entry announcement and later shared the reasoning behind the launch in a dedicated founder story.

Why the Pullback Matters

The phase-out signals a strategic re-focus inside one of Nigeria's best-known fintech unicorns. Moniepoint spent $7.39 million on its UK expansion, TechCabal reported in October 2025. The UK-to-Nigeria corridor is one of Nigeria's largest remittance sources, with formal transfers from the UK reaching £2.7 billion in 2021. By pulling back from a mature, heavily regulated market, Moniepoint is choosing domestic African growth over diaspora corridor expansion — a tradeoff that will shape how other African fintechs approach international launches.

Industry coverage had framed MonieWorld as part of a wider push into diaspora financial services, not merely remittances. Analysts tracking the launch noted the product's positioning in commentary from Monokromatik and coverage of its GBP accounts from TheCondia. Moniepoint's own blog framed MonieWorld as a diaspora-focused financial services product.

The exact decommissioning date and any migration timeline for existing MonieWorld users have not been established. What is clear is that Moniepoint is walking away from its UK consumer product after a significant investment, and the resources that powered it are now heading back to Africa.
