Moniepoint is recruiting Rose Muturi, former Branch Kenya executive, to lead its Kenya operations. The Nigerian fintech unicorn is preparing to enter the market through an acquisition of Sumac Microfinance Bank.

Multiple sources identify Muturi as Managing Director for Branch East Africa. She previously held roles at Tala Kenya, HF Group, Standard Chartered, Chase Bank and TransUnion, and co-founded the Digital Lenders’ Association of Kenya.

Appointment details

The reported move places Muturi in charge of Moniepoint’s Kenya expansion. A June 2025 report states that Moniepoint received clearance from Kenya’s Competition Authority to acquire a 78 percent stake in Sumac Microfinance Bank. Final completion remains subject to Central Bank of Kenya approval.

The parties told the Competition Authority that the transaction would not result in employment loss and that all current employees would be retained under current terms. Moniepoint had earlier explored but abandoned an attempt to acquire KopoKopo.

Background on Muturi and Branch

Muturi brings more than 15 years of experience in financial services and fintech. Branch itself entered Kenya by acquiring an 84.89 percent stake in Century Microfinance Bank in 2022. Muturi was publicly linked to that East African expansion as Managing Director.

Kenya’s microfinance sector recorded Ksh 2.4 billion in losses in 2023, up from Ksh 980 million the previous year. The market remains attractive to foreign digital lenders and neobanks seeking regulated entry points.

Strategic implications

The appointment connects deep local market knowledge with a major Nigerian player seeking scale in a tightly regulated environment. Moniepoint gains an operator familiar with digital lending, microfinance licensing and sector associations.

Kenyan consumers and employees of Sumac Microfinance Bank stand to see continuity in staffing. Existing competitors face an additional well-capitalized cross-border entrant backed by a unicorn valuation.

Tala (Medium announcement): "Rose was named one of Kenya’s Top 40 Women Under 40 in Business Daily, and we are excited to bring her experience, insight and sense of humor to our team and to our customers in Kenya and East Africa."
Competition Authority of Kenya (quoted in Disrupt Africa report): "As per the parties’ submissions, this transaction will not result in negative public interest issues. Specifically, there will be no employment loss, and all the current employees will be retained under current terms,"

Next steps

Observers will watch for Central Bank of Kenya approval of the Sumac deal and any formal announcement confirming Muturi’s role. Further licensing or product launches in Kenya will signal how quickly Moniepoint converts the acquisition into active operations.
