Abia State Secures $145 Million Solar Plant Investment

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has welcomed a proposed $145 million investment to establish a solar manufacturing plant in Umuelele, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
The project is structured as a public-private partnership between the Abia State Government, MD Nwakamma Nigeria Ltd, and Chinese technical partners. Otti met the investors at Government House in Umuahia on 16 July 2026, where the initiative reached final investment decision stage.
This commitment aligns with Otti's agenda to attract manufacturing and renewable energy projects since his 2023 election. The plant will produce solar panels and accessories to address Nigeria's power deficit while creating local jobs and training opportunities.
Dr. Oko Jaja, team lead for the investor consortium, confirmed the $145 million commitment and said the first funding tranche is expected in September 2026. Construction is slated to begin by the end of that month. Dennis Nwakamma, CEO of MD Nwakamma Nigeria Ltd, stated the factory will manufacture solar panels and related accessories while providing employment and technical training for young people.
The state government has already allocated the required land and pledged support to resolve implementation issues. Otti called the project a major boost to Abia's industrial and renewable energy ambitions in an official statement released by Chief Press Secretary Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
Media coverage from Nairametrics and Premium Times frames the facility as potentially one of Nigeria's largest renewable energy manufacturing investments, with expectations of thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Full-scale production is projected to ramp up in phases over 18 to 24 months after ground-breaking.
The development fits Abia's broader push into renewables, including prior waste-to-energy studies and revival of moribund industries acquired from AMCON. It also follows a smaller 60 kWp solar installation commissioned earlier in the same LGA.
