Amazon's market capitalisation surpassed $3 trillion for the first time on Monday, making it only the fifth U.S. company ever to reach the milestone, following a second-quarter earnings report that beat expectations and sent shares soaring.

The stock rose as much as 5.3% intraday, reported Bloomberg, before settling at $279, up 3.1%, according to Reuters. The valuation places Amazon in an exclusive club alongside Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Nvidia, all of which have previously crossed the same threshold.

The rally was fueled by Amazon's Q2 2026 earnings report. CNBC reported that the company posted adjusted earnings per share of $1.97, beating analyst estimates of $1.82. The results were driven by accelerating revenue in its cloud-computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and a broader surge in demand for artificial intelligence capabilities. The earnings beat confirmed a trajectory that market watchers had anticipated for weeks, with early analysis in May already positioning Amazon as a likely candidate for the $3 trillion club.

The immediate jump pushed Amazon's yearly gains to 17.5% at that point, according to Reuters. It also underscores how heavily investor sentiment now weighs a company's AI strategy. For the African and Nigerian tech ecosystem, the milestone serves as a powerful signal of global investment momentum in AI and cloud infrastructure. Many African startups depend on AWS to host and scale their products, and the valuation jump reflects confidence in the very cloud services they rely on.

Amazon had previously first reached a $2 trillion market cap in June 2024. A market-cap tracker cited in the reporting had estimated the company's value at $2.620 trillion as recently as July 8, highlighting the speed of the climb.

The next focal point for investors will be whether Amazon can sustain a valuation above the $3 trillion mark through the rest of the trading week, or if it retreats below the threshold as profit-taking sets in.
