NITDA and its Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation have begun the iHatch Cohort 5 Startup Incubation Programme, marking the transition from application and selection into active support for selected early-stage founders.

Programme Launch Details

The announcement from @ONDINigeria, retweeted by @NITDANigeria, states that the journey has officially begun for Cohort 5 participants. The programme operates as Nigeria’s first truly nationwide incubation effort through a decentralised hub-first model covering all 36 states and the FCT.

iHatch is delivered by ONDI under NITDA in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency. Selected startups are now entering the execution-focused phase after the May 27 2026 application deadline.

Structure and Timeline

Cohort 5 follows a 10-month dual-track design. Five months are dedicated to training and certifying innovation hubs while the remaining period covers startup incubation. The startup-facing component runs as a four-month execution-focused programme for teams ready to convert ideas into working businesses.

Startups must submit bi-weekly progress reports and commit a minimum of 10 hours per week. They work with assigned certified hubs and participate in sessions covering MVP development, legal incorporation, market validation, and investor engagement.

Target Sectors and Eligibility

The programme supports tech-enabled startups in fintech, agritech, healthtech, edtech, cleantech, logistics, security, civic technology, and broader digital innovation. Founders must be at least 18 years old, based anywhere in Nigeria, and apply as teams of at least two members with at least one full-time technical contributor.

One confirmed participant is healthtech startup Appsibiti, whose selection was announced on LinkedIn. Benefits listed in programme materials include expert mentorship, funding opportunities, and industry partnerships.

Hub Track and Ecosystem Building

A parallel call invited innovation hubs to become iHatch Cohort 5 hubs. This track trains and certifies local organisations to serve as long-term support systems for founders in their regions, addressing capacity gaps outside major cities.

Application and management for both tracks run through the Innox platform. Earlier cohorts established the baseline format, with Cohort 4 featuring a five-month intensive incubation model that Cohort 5 builds upon.

National Reach and Policy Alignment

The hub-first model positions iHatch to surface talent and solutions from states that typically receive less visibility in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem. Priority sectors align with national goals around financial inclusion, agricultural productivity, health access, education, and climate adaptation.

As a government-led initiative with JICA support, the programme creates a pre-seed pipeline that feeds later-stage accelerators, angel networks, and venture funds while formalising early ventures through legal incorporation requirements.
