STEM Festival 2025 Sparks Hope, Ideas, and Futures

Port Harcourt’s biggest science and technology gathering returned bigger and bolder in 2025. It spotlighted Africa’s talent in robotics, blockchain, AI, and more, and over $936,000 in scholarships were awarded at STEM Festival 2025.

From July 23 to 26, 2025, innovators, students, and tech enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond converged in Port Harcourt for the STEM Festival 2025. Themed Future Solutions, this year’s edition focused on three critical sectors: agriculture, education, and health, with every showcased solution aimed at solving real-world problems in these areas.

Why the STEM Festival Exists

The organisers were inspired by a glaring reality: the widening gap in technological innovation between African nations and developed countries. They recognised that many upcoming African creatives lacked a world-class platform to showcase their skills and express their knowledge.

The vision? To create an event that not only celebrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) but also integrates it into Africa’s broader tech ecosystem, from robotics and blockchain to IoT and AI. The festival is designed as a space where anyone can innovate and be heard, regardless of their tech pathway.

The Goals Driving the 2025 Edition

This year’s festival was guided by six core objectives:

1. Make STEM education accessible to diverse demographics.
2. Give the next generation a platform to provide and showcase real-world solutions.
3. Increase awareness and knowledge of STEM.
4. Empower young innovators to solve problems through creativity and technology.
5. Bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
6. Foster a culture of continuous learning in science and technology across Africa.

The target audience was broad, from children as young as eight to professionals in their 40s. The programme aimed to inspire, upskill, and empower attendees, allowing them to demonstrate their abilities while collaborating on solutions to pressing societal challenges.

The 2025 edition was packed with activities that captured the spirit of innovation:

• STEM Competitions: Participants competed across six categories: robotics/AI, blockchain technology, coding, game development/animation, IoT/Electronics, and drone technology. The energy was contagious as attendees watched their peers create and problem-solve in real time.
  
• Expert Presentations: Industry leaders shared insights, helping position Nigeria as a future STEM giant.

• Pitch Day: Innovators pitched their solutions to government officials, with some already progressing towards real-world implementation.
  
• Life-changing Scholarships: Nine outstanding participants, six students and three volunteers, received scholarships worth a total of $936,000 to study at Anna Maria College in Massachusetts, USA.
  
• Global Representation: Select winners will represent Nigeria at the World Robot Olympiad in Singapore later this year.
  

Innovation on Display

Two standout projects captured attention:

• Agricultural Multi-Function Robot: Developed under the advanced robotics category, this device uses sensors to monitor farms, detect intruders, operate as a sprinkler, and perform multiple agricultural functions, a potential game-changer for precision farming.
  
• Blockchain Health Records System: Built on the Solana blockchain, this solution enables patients to securely store and access their health records, addressing key privacy and efficiency challenges in the healthcare sector.

The 2025 STEM Festival saw a surge in participants and diversity. In 2024, schools dominated the line-up, but this year featured a wider demographic, proving that innovation is not bound by age or background. Representatives from different parts of the world added an international flavour, while partnerships with tech communities in Port Harcourt made it feel like a tech reunion.

The festival’s influence extended beyond its four-day run:

• STEM Heroes Quiz: A knowledge competition revealed just how eager participants were to learn, with students asking high-level, curiosity-driven questions.
  
• Community STEM Clubs: Inspired by the event, new STEM clubs are being formed in various parts of the community and are driven by local tech groups.
  
• School Outreach: Schools have begun reaching out to integrate STEM-focused programmes into their curricula.
